Spatiotemporal Program – V5 Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) in North Maluku

Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) (@iwipofficial) is an integrated heavy metal processing industrial area located in Lelilef Village, Weda, Central Halmahera Regency, North Maluku Province in 5000 ha of land. Established on 30 August 2018, IWIP is one of the 2020-2024 National RPJMN Priority Projects and was designated as one of the National Strategic Projects by President Joko Widodo through the ratification of the Presidential Regulation (Perpres) of the Republic of Indonesia Number 109 of 2020 concerning the Third Amendment to Presidential Regulation Number 3 of 2016 concerning the Acceleration of Implementation of National Strategic Projects. This industry manages ferronickel mining materials and their derivatives into batteries for electric vehicles, stainless steel, supporting facilities, and smelters.

The spatiotemporal-based detection results show changes in land cover that are suspected of being deforested as a result of IWIP development. In 2017, it showed that the majority of land cover is still green, indicating that the area is still covered by forest vegetation. However, in 2018 it became clear that the land cover had changed due to the construction of IWIP which started from the west, and then in 2019, it showed that the development escalation began to spread to the east. Deforestation areas on the coast are designated for industrial areas while those in hilly areas are designated for mining areas.

The monitoring method uses sentinel-2 satellite imagery with a composite band, namely SWIR-NIR-RED (B11-B8-B4).
